The Problem
Classic Alexa is well known and well loved by millions of users. How can we make Alexa even better using the power of LLM and multi-agent experiences?
My Opportunity
I had multiple opportunities to lead the design efforts, and define the UX strategy, for several multi-agent experiences for Alexa+. I focused primarily on onboarding, discovery, and automated task completion.
My Role
I was the lead UX Designer for several initiatives and explorations during my time on Alexa+. My focus was developing UX strategies that both built trust in the new capabilities and enabled delightful discovery of more autonomous, multi-agent experiences for users.
I was responsible for:
Strategy Definition and Implementation. Created vision for user centric experiences using user data, contributing to several experiments live features used by over 1 million Alexa+ users. Led multi-org workshop focused on defining onboarding vision for Alexa+.
Leadership Presentation and Communication. Regularly met with senior leaders to present current work for feedback and alignment.
Pattern Creation and Documentation. Created several pattern documentation sources to be used by teams across Alexa organization, such as patterns for handling feature discovery and initial agent interactions.
Prototyping and Research. Created several prototypes used in user research and presentations to leadership.
Cross Functional Collaboration. Worked directly with product, engineering, science, and research teams to establish best practices and ensure use centric experiences.
Challenges Faced
Ecosystem vs Persona
Navigating the ambiguity of a multi-agent ecosystem, I facilitated critical alignment between engineering, product, and branding to preserve the trusted 'Alexa' persona. I defined core patterns for agent arbitration and handoff, transforming a non-deterministic technical challenge into a reliable, predictable user experience.
System-Centric vs User-Centric
Partnering directly with Amazon’s Science teams on Alexa+, I balanced the complex goals of deep-tech development with the realities of user interaction. I translated high-level technical capabilities into intuitive frontend experiences, facilitating a shift from system-centric to user-centric thinking. By advocating for usability in this heavily technical environment, I ensured that powerful autonomous agents were delivered as seamless, predictable, and easy-to-use features.
There’s more to this story
